MUSCODA…..Several local organization and two state agencies are partnering to offer special tours in conjunction with the annual Muscoda Morel Mushroom Festival on Saturday, May 16th and Sunday, May 17th.
Guided tours of effigy mounds at Frank’s Hill will be given by Mark Cupp, who worked for many years with former landowner Frank Shadewald on protection of the sacred site in the Town of Eagle, Richland County. The tours will depart from the bus stop near the Flea Market two blocks north of Mushroom Headquarters at 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. on Saturday and at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday. A short hike will be required to the top of the hill. Participants will learn about the effigy mound building culture that flourished in the region over 1000 years ago and will receive information about the unique mounds at the site. Frank’s Hill also offers a tremendous panoramic vista of the lower Wisconsin River valley.
New for the 2015 Morel Mushroom Festival are guided nature hikes along the Wisconsin River and backwaters. Tour guides will be Department of Natural Resources Wildlife Biologists Travis Anderson and Dan Goltz. The nature hikes will start from the shelter by the boat landing at Victora Riverside Park at 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. on Saturday. The hikes will last approximately one hour and will be on level ground. The guides will give information on the birds of the area, prairie restoration efforts and wildlife habitat projects in the Lower Wisconsin State Riverway. Bring a pair of binoculars and camera!!!
Organizations and agencies making these events include the Muscoda Festival Committee, Chamber of Commerce, Three Eagles Foundation, Cultural Landscape Legacies, Lower Wisconsin State Riverway Board and Department of Natural Resources.
